Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 11 November 2025 – Global new energy technology giant GT PowerSafe has reached a historic agreement with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) to secure a $5 billion strategic investment. The two sides will jointly build the world’s first gigawatt solid hydrogen storage system production line, the core technology of the revolutionary nanoporous metal-organic framework (MOFs) material, hydrogen storage density of 7.5wt% (3 times higher than high-pressure gas tanks), plans to 2027 for the NEOM New City thousands of hydrogen energy heavy trucks. This move marks that the cooperation between China and Saudi Arabia in the field of green hydrogen has entered a deep coordination stage of technology joint research, capital joint investment and market joint expansion.

Technological disruption: Cracking the “impossible triangle” of hydrogen storage
GT PowerSafe’s “H2Core™” solid-state hydrogen storage system has achieved three major breakthroughs:

Ultra-high density storage and transportation:

The specific surface area of MOFs material is 6,500㎡/g, and the hydrogen storage capacity per cubic meter is 56kg (40kg for 70MPa high-pressure tanks).

The working pressure is reduced to 5MPa, the transportation energy consumption is reduced by 80%, and the double extreme test of desert high temperature (55℃) and extreme cold (-40℃) is passed.

NEOM New Town Demonstration Project (coming on stream in 2027) :

Hydrogen energy heavy truck hub: provides hydrogen storage system for the world’s largest hydrogen-powered mining truck fleet (1,200), each vehicle can travel up to 800km, refueling time <8 minutes;

Green steel for hydrogen: In cooperation with the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), green hydrogen is used to replace coke in steelmaking, reducing carbon emissions per ton of steel by 92%;

Seawater hydrogen production coupling: Supporting the construction of 400MW photovoltaic +200MW electrolytic cell, annual output of green hydrogen 60,000 tons, the cost pressure to $1.9 /kg (the world’s lowest).
